Culture in Bucharest: the short answer

Bucharest has a full cultural calendar that runs most of the year. The National Opera (Opera Națională București) stages a weekly programme of opera and ballet. The George Enescu Philharmonic plays at the Romanian Athenaeum from September onwards. Every two years, the George Enescu International Festival brings leading orchestras to the city for about a month at the end of summer. The last edition ran from 24 August to 21 September 2025, and the next is in 2027.

For a foreign family, the main practical points are language and tickets. Operas are sung in the original language with surtitles, but at the National Opera the surtitles are in Romanian. Theatre is mostly in Romanian, although the National Theatre has started adding English surtitles to some productions. Tickets are bought online or at the box office, and the official channels are the safe ones.

In plain words: music needs no translation, so concerts and opera are the easiest way in. Theatre in English is still the exception, and the official ticket site is the only one to trust.

The National Opera: how it works

The National Opera Bucharest is a public institution under the Ministry of Culture, with its address at Bulevardul Unirii 22 on its official site. The current repertoire includes titles like The Barber of Seville, Madama Butterfly and Il Trovatore. The show pages list the length, the number of intervals and the language. For the Italian repertoire, the surtitles are in Romanian.

Practical rules from the Opera's own information page:

  • Buying: at the box office, daily 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–19:00 (cash or card), or online at tickets.operanb.ro. Tickets cannot be reserved and paid later.
  • Fakes: the Opera has warned about fake, duplicate or resold tickets for high-demand shows. Buy only through the official channels.
  • Children: under 6 is not recommended, except at children's shows, where the minimum age is 4. The children's repertoire includes Puss in Boots, Hansel and Gretel, and Sleeping Beauty.
  • Timing: for the main hall, the Opera suggests arriving about an hour early. Latecomers are seated at the first interval.
  • Tours: guided tours of the building for groups of at least 6, Monday to Friday 10:00–16:00, at 15 lei per adult and 5 lei per child or student. English or French guiding can be requested.
  • English help: an English-speaking ticket line is listed on the Opera's site for online purchases.

The Romanian Athenaeum and the Philharmonic

The Athenaeum is the home of the George Enescu Philharmonic. The symphonic and chamber seasons start in the autumn. According to the Philharmonic's ticket page:

  • Tickets are sold online on filarmonicaenescu.ro (up to six per session, seats held 30 minutes, a 4% payment commission) and at the Athenaeum box office.
  • From October to December 2026, the box office opens Tuesday to Friday 12:00–19:00, and on weekends only when there are concerts.
  • Prices are announced for each concert on the day tickets go on sale.
  • Tickets are refundable only if the event is cancelled or rescheduled.

The Philharmonic also says it cannot vouch for tickets bought anywhere other than its own site or oveit.com.

The George Enescu Festival: 2025 and 2027

The festival runs in odd-numbered years and is organised by ARTEXIM with funding from the Ministry of Culture. The 2025 edition opened on Sunday 24 August with the George Enescu Philharmonic at the Grand Palace Hall, and its programme ran to 21 September 2025, with concerts at both the Grand Palace Hall and the Athenaeum.

In even years, the same organisers run the George Enescu International Competition. The 2026 competition was held in Bucharest from 23 August to 19 September 2026.

Music needs no translation, so concerts and opera are the easiest way into Bucharest's cultural life.

The next festival is due in 2027. When we checked, we did not find official dates on the festival's own site, so confirm them on festivalenescu.ro before you plan travel or guests around it. Tickets for past editions were sold through the official site and its ticketing partner.

Theatre: what works if you don't speak Romanian

Most Bucharest theatre is performed in Romanian. The most useful development for newcomers is the National Theatre's surtitling: in October 2026, Agerpres reported that TNB is adding English surtitles to a selection of its autumn productions and plans to continue periodically. We could not open the theatre's own page to confirm the list, so check tnb.ro for current dates.

A practical rule: on any theatre's listing, look for "supratitrare în limba engleză" (English surtitles). If it is not written, assume there are none.

Museums: prices and opening hours

Museum Adult ticket Hours Family notes
National Village Museum "Dimitrie Gusti" 40 lei Gate on Kiseleff 28: summer Tue–Sun 9:00–19:00; winter daily 9:00–17:00 Children 0–6 free; pupils and students 10 lei; 50% off on Monday and Tuesday, when most houses are closed
National History Museum (MNIR) 32 lei Wed–Sun 10:00–18:00, closed Mon–Tue Children under 7 free; under-18s free during school holidays

Both museums give free entry on the 26th of each month to Euro 26 card holders up to age 30. The Village Museum also sells passes for regular visitors, from 200 lei a week for adults, and offers guided tours in English, French or Russian on 48 hours' written notice.

A first-season checklist

  1. Pick one opera, one Athenaeum concert and one museum for your first month.
  2. Buy only on the official sites: tickets.operanb.ro, filarmonicaenescu.ro, tnb.ro.
  3. Check the language line on each show page.
  4. For children, check the age rules before buying.
  5. Note the box office hours: the Athenaeum office is closed on Mondays.
  6. Put the next Enescu Festival on your calendar, and check the official dates in early 2027.
  7. If you live north of the city, plan your evening return before you buy late-evening tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Are operas in Bucharest subtitled in English?

At the National Opera, the show pages we checked list surtitles in Romanian, and the operas are sung in the original language. Check each show page, as the language line is given there.

When is the next George Enescu Festival?

The festival runs every two years. The last edition was 24 August to 21 September 2025, and the next is in 2027. Official dates had not been published on the festival site when we checked, so confirm them on festivalenescu.ro.

Where do I buy tickets for the Romanian Athenaeum?

On filarmonicaenescu.ro, on oveit.com, or at the Athenaeum box office. Online purchases carry a 4% payment commission, and tickets are refunded only if the concert is cancelled or rescheduled.

Is there theatre in English in Bucharest?

Some. In autumn 2026, the National Theatre began adding English surtitles to selected productions, according to Agerpres. Check tnb.ro for current dates, and look for "supratitrare în limba engleză" on any listing.

Can I take young children to the opera?

The National Opera does not recommend shows for children under 6, except its children's productions, where the minimum age is 4. Children must always be with an adult.

The bottom line

Bucharest's cultural life is easy to enter through music. An opera night or a concert at the Athenaeum needs no Romanian, the tickets are bought online in minutes, and a museum visit costs 32–40 lei for an adult. Theatre in English is still limited, but it is growing.
