A direct flight from Ben Gurion to Otopeni takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, with no time difference: same time zone.
In recent seasons El Al, Wizz Air and TAROM have flown direct, with additional carriers in some seasons.
Train to Gara de Nord in about 20 to 25 minutes, express bus 100, or Bolt and Uber.
The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. ETIAS is expected in the last quarter of 2026.
At Compass on the Lake the drive to the airport is about 10 minutes, and to central Bucharest about 25.
How long is the flight from Tel Aviv to Bucharest?
A direct flight from Ben Gurion to Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) in Otopeni takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and your watch does not move: Israel and Romania share the same time zone. In recent seasons El Al, Wizz Air and TAROM have flown the route direct, with additional carriers in some seasons. The airport is about 18 km from central Bucharest, and a train reaches the main Gara de Nord station in about 25 minutes.
Here is something that surprises almost everyone who comes to a tour with us: the drive from home in Tel Aviv to Ben Gurion is sometimes longer than the drive from landing in Otopeni to the villas in Balotești. It is not a minor detail. When you buy a home abroad, you also buy the journey to it.
Who flies direct from Israel to Bucharest
Tel Aviv to Bucharest is one of the longest-standing and most stable routes from Ben Gurion to Eastern Europe. Based on airline schedules in recent seasons:
| Airline | Type | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| El Al | Israeli carrier | High frequency, including daily flights in most seasons |
| Wizz Air | Low-cost | Low base fare; checked bags and seat selection cost extra |
| TAROM | Romanian flag carrier | Direct flights to Otopeni, SkyTeam member |
Additional Israeli and Romanian carriers operate in some seasons. Frequencies and airlines change from season to season, so always check the current schedule on the Israel Airports Authority website or the airlines' sites before you plan.
In periods of security tension, we have seen foreign airlines suspend flights to Israel for a time in recent years. If the trip matters, for example a notary signing, check the ticket's change and cancellation policy in advance.
What changes at the border: EES and, soon, ETIAS
Israelis enter Romania, as anywhere in Schengen, without a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180. Two important changes:
- EES, the EU Entry/Exit System. According to the European Commission, the system has been fully operational at all Schengen borders since 10 April 2026. On your first entry a facial image and fingerprints are taken; later entries are faster.
- ETIAS, an online travel authorisation. According to the EU's official site, the system is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026, with the exact date announced months in advance. Once it runs, Israelis will need to complete an online application before flying.
Price, baggage and timing: three booking rules
- Compare the total fare, not the base fare. On low-cost airlines a suitcase, a large bag and seat selection are extra. With important documents and winter clothes, the difference can disappear.
- Book early for holidays. Around Israeli holidays and summer breaks, demand on the route is high and prices rise accordingly.
- Choose a flexible ticket when you have a fixed meeting. If the trip is built around a notary signing or a bank meeting, paying for flexibility is worth it.
From the airport to the city: three ways in
Henri Coandă airport is in the town of Otopeni, north of Bucharest, about 18 km from the Old Town.
- Train. CFR Călători trains link the airport to the main Gara de Nord station in about 20 to 25 minutes. From there you continue by metro.
- Express bus 100. The line that replaced the old 783 in December 2023, running to the city's central squares.
- Taxi or ride-hailing. Bolt and Uber operate in Bucharest. Book through the app or at the official taxi stands, not with someone who approaches you in arrivals.
For the north of the city, Pipera, Băneasa and suburbs such as Balotești and Corbeanca, a car is usually the fastest option. We wrote about the suburb where the airport sits in our Otopeni guide.
When you buy a home abroad, you also buy the journey to it.
Why airport proximity matters to buyers from abroad
If you live in Israel and buy in Bucharest, you will fly back and forth a lot: for the tour, the signing, construction visits, handover, and later for holidays. Every half hour of traffic between airport and home adds up.
So when you assess an area, measure the time from the airport, not just from the centre. In our project, Compass on the Lake in Balotești, the drive to the airport is about 10 minutes and to central Bucharest about 25 minutes. Read about the area in our Balotești guide, and about the villas in a Walla Nadlan report (in Hebrew).
How to plan a property-viewing trip
From my conversations with buyers from Israel, this is the structure that works:
- Four days, not a weekend. A day to arrive and see neighbourhoods, two days for viewings and meetings, and a day for the lawyer and for thinking.
- A morning flight out. That way you use the first day.
- Meetings arranged in advance. Your own lawyer, a bank if you need a mortgage, and a notary if there is a signing.
- At least one rush hour. Drive the road you would use every day at morning peak.
- A ready checklist. Use our villa tour checklist.
And if you cannot come to sign: notarial signing in Romania cannot be done remotely, but you can sign through a power of attorney.
