According to the Romanian Ministry of Defence, 25 drones entered the airspace in 2026 and four were shot down. 2026 is the most difficult year since the war began.
In 2026, 64 attacks were recorded near the border, compared with 28 in the whole of 2025. The risk is rising, and concentrated in the east.
The shoot-down closest to Bucharest was over uninhabited land in Buzău, about 90 km from the city. No incident has been reported in Bucharest or Ilfov.
Romania has been in NATO since 2004 and is covered by Article 5. On its territory: a battlegroup led by France and about 1,000 US troops.
A law signed in May 2025 allows the army to destroy a drone that enters without authorisation. In July 2026 it was used for the first time, three shoot-downs in three days.
Security in Romania: the short answer
Romania has been a NATO member since 2004 and borders Ukraine, and 2026 is its most difficult year in security terms since the war began. According to the Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MApN), by the end of August 2026, 25 drones had entered its airspace, four of them were shot down, and 64 attacks were recorded near the border, more than double 2025. Most incidents are concentrated in the east, in Tulcea and Galați counties and the Danube Delta, about 190 to 290 km from Bucharest. No incident has been reported in Bucharest or Ilfov.
I write this article with care. We are Israelis, and we know that a security threat is not a headline but daily life. So I will not tell you "there is nothing to worry about", and I will not frighten you either. Only facts, sources and distances.
What happened at the border in 2026?
Russia is attacking the Ukrainian side of the Danube, opposite Romania, and drones and drone fragments sometimes cross the border. According to an MApN summary from the end of August 2026, 64 attacks near the border were recorded in 2026, compared with 28 in the whole of 2025. Fighter jets were scrambled 49 times this year, and 2026 is the first year in which Romania has shot down drones.
The Romanian Ministry of Defence told ABC News that, based on the data it holds, it cannot be determined that the increase stems from an intention to harm Romania. That is an assessment, not a promise, so it is worth following.
The risk is real, it is rising, and it is geographically concentrated. All three statements are true together.
Where did the drones fall, and how far is it from Bucharest?
The table lists notable incidents in 2026. Distances are as the crow flies, calculated from coordinates, and rounded.
| Date | Place | What happened | Distance from Bucharest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 29.5.2026 | Galați | A Russian Geran-2 drone hit a 10-storey residential building, two people slightly injured | about 190 km |
| 24.7.2026 | Near Padina, Buzău county | A Romanian F-16 shot down a drone over uninhabited land, Romania's first shoot-down | about 90 km |
| 25-26.7.2026 | Sulina area, the Delta | Two more drones were shot down, one of them over territorial waters | about 290 km |
| 14.8.2026 | Luncavița, Tulcea | A drone crashed near a quarry, no casualties | about 200 km |
| 1-2.10.2026 | Plauru, Tulcea | A drone crashed and caused a fire, no casualties | about 230 km |
The Galați incident was reported by Digi24 and MApN: the drone was tracked while still over Ukraine, but there was no time to intercept it. Afterwards the Russian consulate in Constanța was closed.
And the Buzău incident deserves an honest mention: according to Euronews, the drone was detected over the Black Sea, moved west through the Sulina area towards Buzău, and was shot down over uninhabited land near Padina. It was the deepest incursion into the country this year, and it was about 90 km from Bucharest.
What did Romania do in response?
On 19 May 2025 a law was signed allowing the army to destroy, neutralise or take control of a drone that enters the airspace without authorisation, with destruction as the last resort. In July 2026 the law was used for the first time: three shoot-downs in three days.
In addition, the RO-ALERT warning system sends messages to phones in areas where a threat is detected. The alerts reported in 2026 were sent to counties in the east and north-east of the country.
The risk is real, it is rising, and it is geographically concentrated. All three statements are true together.
What does NATO give Romania?
Romania joined NATO in 2004, so it benefits from Article 5, the mutual defence commitment. In practice, the presence on the ground includes:
- A multinational battlegroup led by France, at the Cincu base, since 2022.
- Allied aircraft on air policing. The fourth drone this year was shot down by a Spanish F-18, north of Galați, as part of a NATO mission.
- US forces. In October 2025 the United States announced that it would not replace the brigade that had completed a rotation in Romania, and about 1,000 troops remained. Romania and US Army Europe stressed that this is not a withdrawal, and that development of the Mihail Kogălniceanu base continues.
A NATO member absorbing the fringes of someone else's war is not a country at war. But nor is it a country where you can ignore the map.
Does it affect Bucharest and the area north of it?
As of October 2026, according to the published incidents, no drone incident has been recorded in Bucharest or Ilfov county. The closest point was the shoot-down in Buzău, about 90 km from the city.
In terms of daily life, Bucharest functions as normal. And on personal safety in the city, crime and the feeling of safety on the street, we wrote separately in our article on whether Bucharest is safe.
But it is fair to say the opposite too: an upward trend is a trend. Anyone buying a home for twenty years needs to ask not only "What is happening today?" but "What will happen if this continues?". The honest answer is that nobody knows, and a buyer's best protection is the choice of location.
What this means for someone buying a home in Romania
- Location. The east, along the Danube and the Delta, is the exposed area. Bucharest and the area north of it are hundreds of kilometres away.
- Insurance. Read in your home insurance policy what is excluded. On types of insurance, see our guide to home insurance in Romania.
- Sources. Follow announcements from MApN and the emergency authorities, not online headlines.
- The same test as any investment. Only buy a property that makes sense to you in a less favourable scenario too.
Who it suits, and who less so
Anyone for whom regional security is a decisive consideration, and who does not want to live in a country bordering a war, should respect that feeling. No article should talk you out of it.
And anyone who weighs the data will see a NATO and EU member that responds, shoots down and reports transparently, and where the incidents are concentrated far from the capital.

Yes. As a NATO member Romania is covered by Article 5. A multinational battlegroup led by France operates on its territory, allied aircraft take part in air policing, and about 1,000 US troops are stationed there.
Is Romania allowed to shoot down drones?
Yes. A law signed on 19 May 2025 allows the army to destroy, neutralise or take control of a drone that enters without authorisation. The first actual shoot-down was on 24 July 2026.
The bottom line
