Driving from Balotești to Bucharest: the short answer

Without traffic, the drive from Balotești to central Bucharest takes about 25 minutes, to the airport about 10 minutes and to Pipera about 15 minutes. At peak hours it is a different story: according to the TomTom index, Bucharest was the 20th most congested city in the world in 2025, and a 10 km drive in the city in the evening took more than 45 minutes. Widening the DN1 to three lanes in each direction is still at the feasibility study stage, as of October 2026, so anyone buying today needs to plan around the existing road.

I know this route well, which is why I do not sell it as "a quarter of an hour from the city". Our times are correct, but only at the right hour. Anyone buying a home in a suburb also needs to know what happens at eight in the morning.

The times we publish, and what they tell you

These are the driving times from Balotești, by car, without traffic (I explain from which exact point further on):

Destination Drive time without traffic What affects it at peak hours
Henri Coandă International Airport about 10 minutes Congestion on the DN1 around Otopeni
Therme București about 10 minutes Hardly passes through the city
The planned Mark Twain International School campus about 6 minutes Local driving
AISB, the American International School of Bucharest about 15 minutes Morning traffic jams in Pipera
Pipera about 15 minutes Morning traffic jams in Pipera
Central Bucharest about 25 minutes The urban stretch from Băneasa southwards

The time without traffic tells you where the home is. The peak-hour time tells you how you will live in it. Both numbers are correct, and you need both.

What happens at peak hours

Official data by hour and by route is not published at the level of the route from Balotești, so I will not invent a number for you. What is known, from the TomTom Traffic Index for 2025, is what happens inside the city:

  • An average 10 km drive in Bucharest took about 32 minutes and 26 seconds, 1 minute and 11 seconds more than in 2024.
  • At evening peak hours, the same 10 km took more than 45 minutes, according to Euronews România.
  • The average driver lost 171 hours in peak-hour traffic, compared with 150 in 2024, according to Newsweek România.
  • Bucharest ranked 20th in the world and fifth in Europe.

What this means for someone commuting from Balotești: most of the extra time is not created in the suburb but at the entrance to the city. Someone working in Pipera or near the airport gains, because they hardly enter the city. Someone driving every morning to the centre or the south of the city pays the full price.

The DN1 widening: what is planned, and what stage it is at

The national road company CNAIR wants to widen the DN1 to three lanes in each direction, on a stretch of about 2.5 km between the airport and the junction with the A0 ring road, with full traffic separation and a left-turn option at a turning loop after the A0 junction, towards Ploiești. This was reported by Buletin de București and Economedia.

Where it stands:

  1. The tender is for a feasibility study, not for construction. A first tender was cancelled, and the repeat tender received 10 bids, according to a CNAIR announcement from February 2025 published by Economica.net. The winner was given 7 months to prepare the study.
  2. There is no construction timetable. We found no published date for the start of works.
  3. A complementary project at the airport. Bucharest Airports National Company (CNAB) selected a designer for a feasibility study for an underpass between the southern part of the airport and the DN1, according to b365 in April 2026.

Rule of thumb: a road project at the feasibility study stage should not be part of your calculation today. If it gets built, that is a bonus.

The alternatives to the car, and what they are worth

The A0 ring road. The northern section between the DN1 at Corbeanca and the DN2 at Afumați is open, and lets you travel east without entering the city. Details in our guide to the A0.

The time without traffic tells you where the home is. The peak-hour time tells you how you will live in it.

Bus. The regional line R442 of the Bucharest transport company (STB) runs from Piața Presei Libere, via Otopeni, to Therme in Balotești. According to the Bucharest-Ilfov public transport authority (TPBI), the route was extended to Therme in July 2021. Check the current timetable before relying on it.

Metro. The M6 line to the airport, with a stated opening date in 2029, will end at the airport and will not reach Balotești. From Balotești you will be able to drive to the northern stations. Details in our guide to the M6 line.

How to test your own commute before buying

  1. Drive it once at the real hour. Not on a Saturday at noon. On a weekday, at the time you will leave for work or school.
  2. Use departure-time planning. Navigation apps let you choose a future departure time and see a range of travel times.
  3. Think about the destination, not "Bucharest". Pipera, the airport and the international schools in the north are close. The centre and the south are further away at peak hours.
  4. Ask about flexibility. One or two days a week working from home change the calculation more than any new road.

Who this commute suits, and who less so

It suits: people who work in the north of the city, in Pipera or near the airport, families with children at schools in the north, people who work partly from home, and people who fly a lot.

It suits less: people who drive every day to the centre or south of Bucharest at eight in the morning, and people who do not want to depend on a car.

Compass on the Lake: where the times come from

I will mention this once: the times in the table are calculated from our project, Compass on the Lake, 29 villas on a private street by the lake in Balotești. I wrote them here so you know where they come from, not to convince you that the road is empty.
