Bucharest's General Council renamed Herăstrău Park in December 2017. The National Village Museum is inside it, about 22 km from Balotești.
Weekends north of Bucharest: the short answer
North of Bucharest, the weekend is mostly water and trees. Lake Snagov with its island monastery, the protected Scroviștea forest, Băneasa forest with the city zoo, and the lake and Village Museum in King Michael I Park (Herăstrău) are all within about 20 to 25 km by road from Balotești. Two golf clubs and a riding centre are closer than that, and Therme, the large thermal spa complex, is about 8 km away.
The distances in this article are road distances from Balotești town hall on the DN1, measured with Google Maps on 22 October 2026. Driving time depends heavily on DN1 traffic, especially on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
In plain words: from the north you reach a lake, a forest or a park in under half an hour, and you drive against the city's weekend traffic, not into it.

Our guide to Balotești covers daily life in the commune itself.
Lake Snagov: the classic
Snagov is the weekend lake of Bucharest. It is a long natural lake surrounded by forest, and parts of the lake and forest are protected as nature reserves. On an island stands Snagov Monastery, which local tradition links to Vlad Țepeș, the prince of the Dracula legend.
What families do there:
- Visit the monastery on its island, then walk along the shore.
- Rent a boat or join a short boat trip in the warm months.
- Eat by the water. Several lakeside restaurants have gardens.
Our guide to Corbeanca and Snagov describes Snagov as a place to live.
Scroviștea: the quiet forest
Scroviștea, north of Snagov, is a forest and lake area protected as a Natura 2000 site for habitats (ROSCI0224) and for birds (ROSPA0140). Part of the area is also a state protocol estate. That makes it quieter than Snagov, but it also means not every road or shore is open.
Treat it as a nature walk, not a picnic park. Stay on public paths, respect the signs, and take binoculars: the bird protection site exists for a reason.
Băneasa forest and the zoo
Băneasa forest lies on the northern edge of the city, between Băneasa and Otopeni. It is the nearest large forest to the northern districts, popular with runners, cyclists and dog walkers. The Bucharest Zoo is on its edge, an easy morning with small children.
From the north you reach a lake, a forest or a park in under half an hour.
Our guide to Băneasa covers the neighbourhood around it.
King Michael I Park (Herăstrău)
One of Bucharest's largest parks was renamed by the city's General Council in December 2017, from Herăstrău Park to King Michael I Park. Most people still call it Herăstrău. It surrounds Lake Herăstrău, with paths around the water.
Inside the park is the National Village Museum "Dimitrie Gusti", an open-air museum of traditional houses, churches and mills moved from villages across Romania. It is one of the best two hours you can spend with children in Bucharest.
Golf and horse riding
Golf near Bucharest is more developed than many expect. The closest course to Balotești is the Bucharest Golf Club at Vlădiceasca, in Snagov commune. Further away are the Selas Golf & Polo Club at Gorgota and the National Golf & Country Club at Niculești. For winter, there is an indoor golf venue on Calea Bucureștilor in Otopeni.
For riding, the Equestria centre at Tâncăbești (Snagov) is the nearest, and there is a riding school in Mogoșoaia. Ask each club about lessons for children, membership and whether visitors can book.
Therme: the rainy-day plan
Therme București, in Balotești, opened on 14 January 2016. It has an indoor area for about 4,000 people, with a family zone with slides, mineral pools and a sauna area. It is the answer to a wet Sunday in February. Our guide to Therme has the details.
Through the year
- Spring and autumn are the best seasons for the forests: Scroviștea, Băneasa and the Snagov shore are green or golden, and the paths are quiet.
- Summer belongs to the lakes. Snagov and Herăstrău are busiest on hot weekends, so go in the morning.
- Winter is short on outdoor options. Therme and indoor golf carry the season, and the Village Museum is beautiful under snow.
Our article on Bucharest's weather by season explains what to expect month by month.
Your first four weekends: a checklist
- Weekend 1: Snagov Monastery in the morning, lunch by the lake.
- Weekend 2: Village Museum and a walk around Lake Herăstrău. Go early to beat the crowds.
- Weekend 3: Băneasa forest by bike, then the zoo with the children.
- Weekend 4: A trial golf or riding lesson, and Therme if it rains.
- Every weekend: Check DN1 traffic before you leave, and come back before Sunday afternoon.
